🎬 Session 6: The Story Is Made in the Edit

Our final filmmaking session brought everything together as we explored the magic of post-production—the stage where all the footage becomes a finished film.

The young filmmakers discovered one of cinema’s biggest secrets: a film isn’t truly made when it’s shot—it’s made in the edit.

We explored how editors shape emotion, pace and meaning simply by changing the order of shots. Using the same clips, the group saw how a completely different story could be created through editing alone, proving that every cut has the power to change how an audience thinks and feels.

To understand the process before using computers, everyone took part in an analogue editing exercise, physically cutting, rearranging and sequencing printed film frames into new stories. It was a fun, hands-on way to understand the foundations of editing and why every decision matters.

The participants then stepped into the edit suite, getting their first experience of professional editing software as they assembled footage, trimmed clips and watched their films begin to come to life.

Looking back over the programme has been incredible. In just a few sessions, these young people have gone from generating story ideas to learning cinematography, lighting, sound, directing, production planning, filming on location and finally editing their own work.

More importantly, they’ve discovered that filmmaking is about far more than cameras and computers. It’s about creativity, teamwork, communication and finding the confidence to tell stories that matter.

A huge congratulations to every young filmmaker for their enthusiasm, imagination and hard work throughout the programme. We can’t wait to see where their storytelling journeys lead next.
