🎬 Session 3: Seeing Stories Through the Lens
This week, our young filmmakers discovered that the camera doesn’t just record a story—it shapes the way an audience feels.
We explored how shot sizes can completely transform a scene, learning why filmmakers choose close-ups to capture emotion, medium shots to build connection, and wide shots to establish place and context. Every frame has a purpose, and every choice helps tell the story.
Next, we explored the power of props in storytelling. A table filled with everyday objects became a treasure chest of ideas as participants challenged themselves to build stories around ordinary items. They learned that a prop isn’t just something an actor holds—it can reveal character, create conflict, raise questions and even become the heart of the story itself.
Working in production teams, our young filmmakers then put these ideas into practice, creating five original six-shot films. Each team planned, filmed and directed their own visual story, using purposeful shot choices and carefully selected props to bring their ideas to life.
The session also introduced the fundamentals of interview lighting, where participants discovered how even simple lighting techniques can dramatically improve the mood, focus and professionalism of a film.
To finish the day, everyone took part in our Mystery Box Creativity Challenge. Without knowing what objects they would receive, each team had to transform a handful of unexpected props into the beginning of a brand-new story. It was a brilliant reminder that creativity isn’t about having the perfect idea—it’s about making the most of what you have.
Watching the group’s confidence grow each week has been inspiring. They’re no longer just learning how to operate cameras—they’re learning to think like filmmakers: observing, collaborating, solving creative problems and discovering that unforgettable stories can begin with something as simple as a single object.
🎥 Session 3 complete. Every shot has purpose. Every prop has a story.
