🎬 Session 2: Learning the Language of Film

This week, our young filmmakers took the next step in their journey by discovering that every shot tells part of the story.

The session began by exploring shot sizes and how filmmakers use different camera angles and framing to guide an audience’s emotions and attention. From wide shots that establish a scene to close-ups that reveal emotion, participants learned that where you place the camera is just as important as what you point it at.

We also introduced the different crew roles found on a film set. Everyone had the opportunity to step into the shoes of a director, camera operator, sound recordist, actor, and producer, learning how teamwork and communication are essential to bringing a story to life.

To make the experience feel like a real film set, participants learned the professional set calls used throughout the industry:

🎬 “Quiet on set!”

🎬 “Roll camera!”

🎬 “Sound speed!”

🎬 “Marker!”

🎬 “Action!”

🎬 “Cut!”

With their new skills, the group split into two production teams and put theory into practice by creating their very first 6-shot films. Working together, they planned, rehearsed and filmed short visual stories using purposeful shot choices to communicate a beginning, middle and end.

Watching the young people collaborate, solve problems and bring their ideas to life was fantastic. Every scene they captured showed growing confidence behind—and in front of—the camera.

This was more than learning how to operate a camera. It was learning how to think like filmmakers
