🎬 Week 1 session 1: Every Great Film Begins With an Idea

This week marked the exciting start of our Introduction to Filmmaking Workshop at MBS Centre, where a new group of young storytellers took their very first steps into the world of cinema.

Before picking up a camera, we explored one of the most important lessons in filmmaking: every great film starts with a story.

Using Rory’s Story Cubes, participants worked together to generate original ideas, learning the foundations of storytelling through character, conflict, setting and resolution. The room quickly filled with imagination as each roll of the dice sparked new possibilities.

One group’s favourite concept?

Aliens disguised as sheep competing in a bizarre game to decide the fate of the world.

It’s exactly the kind of wonderfully unexpected idea that reminds us there are no limits to creativity when young people are given the confidence to explore their imagination.

Over the coming weeks, these early concepts will evolve into fully planned productions as participants learn directing, cinematography, sound recording, interviewing, editing and visual storytelling before producing their own short films.

The workshop reflects the wider mission of MBS Centre, a community organisation that has been empowering Westminster residents since 1979 through education, youth development and opportunities that help young people build confidence, resilience and lifelong skills.
